Is it mandatory to apply H4 Extension on or before petition expiry?

My spouse H4 is going to expire on Oct8th ( I94 is on October 18th 2020).

Is it mandatory to apply H4 extension on or before the approved petition expiry date ?

Can we treat H4 as separate and wait for sometime and then apply. What I heard is that H4 can legally stay for 6 months after the approved petition expiry without applying an extension. Please correct me if this is wrong.

My H1B extension is In Progress now. I have filed it in July .

You should apply H4 extension before current H4 i94 expiry.
