Q.2 How long does my passport have to be valid in order to apply for a U. S. visa?
You must possess a passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions).
Citizens of the countries listed below are exempt the six-month rule and need only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay.
India is included in the list which means if you expect a 3 yr visa stamp (which is your period of stay) you need your passport valid for three years. Better to renew and then go for interview.
You can even call VFS and double check
