H1 to H4 change of status stamping in Mexico possible?

Hello,

Is Change of Status stamping (H1-H4) possible in Mexico? I’m getting conflicting answers about this one. Since it’s H1-H4 and not from F or any other status, some say it’s OK.

Has anyone got their H4 cos stamped in Mexico?

You can get your H4 visa stamped in Mexico since its in the same category of H visa.

See this official US embassy link:

Changing category is NOT allowed though as you have rightly got other answers (F to H4 is not possible in Mexico). It is advisable to go to Home country (citizenship) to get category changes done.

Thank you Anil! I was confused as in one of my other questions (whther eligible for Drop box in India), I was told no as it wasn’t the same class of visa.

So, H1-H4 (same category) - OK in Mexico

H1-H4 COS (drop box) Not OK in India - have to show up for interview, correct?

Yes. You are right.

The category is basically the exact visa name.
The same class of visa is what determines the H or F thing.

I think i have confused you by saying ‘category’ where as, i should have used the word ‘class’.

I would say that it is always better to go to your home country to get any visa stamping done in today’s volatile environment.
H4 is a safe bet though as it is dependent on your spouse’s H1B.
